ISSUE NO. 19 | AUGUST 2020
THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF MODERN DAY MUSIC SCHOOL
It’s happening, folks! On September 12th, the members of MDM’s Rock School 101 will perform a socially distanced show at Wicked Eatery and Pub! We’re doing things a little differently to comply with the CDC and NYS guidelines and to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all involved.
Here’s a few details about what to expect!
Wicked is currently operating at 50% capacity which is 170 people. Our band show draw is usually around 150 people, but we’re erring on the side of safety by splitting the show into two halves.

Each band will have a designated time frame which will be in one of two halves with an intermission in between to allow change over. Family and friends of the performers will be invited to join us for either the first half or the second! We ask that you stay for the entire half.
The bands are very excited to perform on the outdoor stage! Wicked has a few rules in place to keep in line with recommended guidelines and health codes. Wicked requires everyone to wear masks indoors and outdoors unless they are seated. The tables are spaced 6 ft. apart and all parties at tables must come together or know each other. They can accommodate 10 people per table given they are a group. Food must be ordered with drinks as per the NYS Mandate and they ask that customers socially distance at the bar. Seating is first come, first served and there can be no mingling, standing, or dancing. This unfortunately means that you won’t be able to stand by the stage to take photos and videos. However, you’re welcome to take photos from your seat or set up a tripod at the front in a non obtrusive way. Additionally, MDM’s General Manager, Cailin, will be taking professional photographs of each band and sharing them on Facebook for everyone to see, download, and share!
In addition to these rules for the audience, MDM is taking extra safety precautions on stage. The band equipment including drums, microphones, amps, etc. will be sanitized between bands. We’ll also provide students hand sanitizer before and after they play. Students will be socially distanced on stage and have the option to remove their mask during their set. These students worked really hard to get this music to your ears and we’re dedicated to making it a fun and successful event!
During the shutdown, band students met with a coach once a week for two months in complimentary “bonus sessions” for private instruction. Tony notes, “The students got a lot of extra practice with the bonus sessions and it really shows. When we came back together in person to practice as a group it was really tight.” Laura noticed that the bands she directed were prepared and eager to get rehearsing.
We can’t wait to share this special show with you! It marks our first event since the world changed and we’re happy to change with it and keep on rocking!
Keep your eye out for the new Rock School 101: Studio session in which bands end the program by recording in MDM’s professional recording studio instead of a live performance! Rock School 101: Studio will launch in the Fall and offers just another great way for students to rock out safely with the best quality instructors and equipment in the Capital Region!
This month we welcome Nicole Rizzo and Connor Olney to the MDM team as Vocal Coaches!
Nicole Rizzo (she/her) is a mezzo-soprano and performance coach from Clifton Park. She recently graduated from Boston Conservatory at Berklee with a BD in Voice Performance. Nicole has performed locally and internationally with groups such as Shenedehowa’s Mostly A Cappella, the Geneseo Chamber Singers, and the Boston Cecilia. She has performed in musical theater productions as well as operas and festivals. In her free time Nicole enjoys loves spending time outside and going to museums!
Nicole’s goal is to empower students with a healthy singing technique while building musicianship. Nicole shared, ”Music has helped me become the hard-working, empathetic person I am today, and has taught me that we never stop learning and growing!”
Actor, singer, and performance coach, Connor Olney (he/him) is also a Clifton Park native!
When Connor was only ten, he hit the stage running in Shenedehowa’s High School production of “Gypsy”. Several years later he became the president of the Shen Musical Company!
During his years at Shen, Connor performed on the Shenendehowa stage dozens of times with groups such as Mostly A Cappella, Drama Club, and Concert Choir. As an actor, he has performed regionally at Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts, Capital Repertory Theater, and Woodstock Playhouse. Connor earned a BFA in Music Theater from Florida State University. Currently in summer quarantine life, Conor is loving all things outdoor including day trips to the beach, hiking , kayak adventures, yoga, and playing with his new puppy!
Conor shared, “Music gave me the platform to express my feelings, build my confidence, and use my voice to inspire others. As they say in the musical theater world, you sing when words aren’t enough to express what you’re feeling. So sing and be vulnerable and confident and unique!!” Connor strives students to tell the story of the song as they perform. In the Fall, Connor will be co-leading a new MDM program, Vocal Group: Musical Theater! Contact the office if you’d like to participate.
We are so happy to have Connor and Nicole on the team here at Modern Day Music! If you see them around, be sure to say hello and welcome them!
We have a TON of awesome group programs for the fall!
Our bands and vocal groups will be ending their sessions by recording in the studio. We are adding a musical theater track to our vocal groups, along with acapella again! We also have songwriting 101 and 201 classes!
