SOGO WEALTH & RISK MANAGEMENT NEWSLETTER
This year’s hurricane season has been especially devastating. Between Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, damage estimates of up to $200 billion have been reported for areas affected in Texas and Florida. And with the recent destruction in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, the effect this season has had on our country has been greatly intensified. Though San Antonio didn’t incur any significant storm related damage, some of our Texas neighbors found much of their communities destroyed in the aftermath.
However, it’s often after such devastation that we are able to truly see the strength and character of our community. When neighbors come together to share resources and help one another in times of loss, we find our commonalities far outweigh our differences. Texas has witnessed harrowing stories of people risking their lives to help strangers, businesses and individuals quickly raising money and donations to send to hard hit areas, and first responders putting boots on the ground to assist residents in the aftermath. Our state has truly shown how strong we are when we come together in the face of adversity.
That’s why we’re passionate about what we do. SOGO makes it our priority to protect what matters most to our clients and help provide peace of mind. Though we can’t control Mother Nature, we can help prepare families should the unthinkable occur. With our help, families won’t have to carry any additional burdens as they begin the task of rebuilding their lives after a loss.
JOSHUA R. HERNANDEZ, PARTNER
If Steve Jimenez isn't working to help his clients protect their assets or plan for their retirements, you'll most likely find him at the pit, perfecting his barbecue skills to help lead his competitive "High Strung BBQ" team to victory!
Over the Labor Day Weekend, Steve combined his passion for helping others and cooking up great barbecue by taking his skills to the Hurricane Harvey affected area in Port Aransas. He teamed up with his barbecue family and KWCares to ensure that residents and first responders were well fed as they worked tirelessly to clean and repair their damaged homes and businesses. SOGO staff also provided donations to purchase food and supplies to help the volunteers serve approximately 5000 free meals throughout the weekend.
“Serving the people of Port A this weekend was simply something we needed to do. Scott and I would have been on the island with our families for our annual Labor Day trip. This year, we gave back to Port A,” Steve said after wrapping up many hours of volunteering with his High Strung BBQ partner, Scott Stanush.
Thank you, Steve, High Strung BBQ, and
all those who worked along with you, for your dedication to serving our Texas communities in need!

A FLOOD IS
BY FEMA AS
"A general and temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of 2 or more acres of normally dry land area or of 2 or more properties (at least 1 of which is the policyholder's property) from: Overflow of inland or tidal waters; or unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source; or mudflow."
FAQ | FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
I don’t live near water—do I need Flood Insurance?
Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States. In fact, your home is more likely to be damaged from flood than from a fire. Floods are caused by storms, melting snow, hurricanes, and water backup due to inadequate or overloaded drainage systems, dam or levee failure.
Doesn’t federal disaster assistance pay for flood damage?
Federal disaster assistance is only available if the President declares a disaster, and more than 90% of all disasters are not Presidentially declared. Even when a disaster is declared, government assistance is provided as a loan that you must pay back with interest. (FEMA offers disaster grants that don't need to be paid back, but this amount is often much less than what is needed to recover) Flood insurance, however, will cover damages even if a disaster is not declared.
What is covered by a Flood Insurance policy?
Direct physical losses caused by floods are covered. Also covered are losses resulting from flood-related erosion caused by strong, abnormally high waves or currents of water activity, severe storm, flash flood or abnormal tidal surge. Damage caused by mudslides as specifically defined in the policy forms is covered.

Since standard home insurance doesn’t cover flooding, it’s important to have protection from floods associated with hurricanes, tropical storms, heavy rains and other conditions that can impact your home or business even if you are located in a low risk area for flooding. Essentially, a flood claim occurs when water enters your home from the ground. If, for instance, a storm produces winds that blow off your roof and then rain enters your home, this damage would be covered under your standard home owners policy.
While you may not be required to purchase flood insurance, carrying this coverage will give you peace of mind that your home and family is protected and is more affordable than you may think.
