Welcome to The Daily Health!
As the Centre Director for ROCK Chiropractic Health Centre, it is a real honour and pleasure to welcome you to our very first newsletter.
Our Centre has grown a lot since 2016 and so has our influence in promoting health within Exeter and the wider Devon community, for this we thank our members and the team around us.
We wanted to have a way of helping our members even more and we decided collectively to start a newsletter titled 'The Daily Health.' This newsletter will keep our members up to date with what is happening within our Centre, the latest research on health and tips on how you can improve your health each day. This is an opportunity for our members to come closer together, we hope you enjoy our very first issue of The Daily Health and find it useful in improving not just your health, but our communities overall health and well-being.
Yours in Health,
Dr Sari Botros

Become more aware of your posture with gentle exercises. In addition to regular adjustments, wall angels are a great exercise to strengthen the get the shoulder and back muscles, while stretching the chest muscles. Start by standing with your back against a wall, with your arms up. Elbows start at a 90-degree bend, then raise and lower them slowly keeping your elbows and arms touching the wall if possible.

Posture Braces or Posture aids have recently become easy to obtain and seem on first inspection to provide instant and easy results for the user. However, the marketing is very misleading. Posture aids are a temporary measure that focus on the aesthetics. They should not be used over extended periods of time as this weakens the muscles, putting pressure on your joints and may even cause further injury.

...Other people see those with poor posture and know they don't want to become that person. By actively deciding to do something about your posture, you prevent problems in both your appearance and more importantly your spine and its effect on your overall health and well-being!
Posture can be an indicator for many medical conditions and cause a wide range of symptoms!
...These forward positions put abnormal pressure on our spine, particularly the neck, and the repeated action causes these positions to become our normality and strangley, sitting up straight becomes more difficult because out bodies have adapted over time.
Overall, we are not nearly as active as our ancestors and this sedentary lifestyle takes its toll on our spines!
"I don't have back pain..."
Many people with poor posture don't experience any pain, especially if they are otherwise fit and active. However, what may come as a surprise to some of you, is that pain is generally one of the last symptoms to appear when there is a problem. The spine has to withstand a lot of abnormal pressure and movement, which our bodies do a great job of adapting to cope with. One of the ways our body adapts to our poor habits is to change your natural posture, for example, someone who sits at a computer all day working, may find that their head drops forward and/or their shoulders start to round. This can be such a slow change you may not even notice it...
"I have terrible posture!"
All the time people comment on their posture or others. Many people know and accept that their posture is not perfect, but most choose to ignore it. There is a huge misconception that posture is not important because it only affects how they look....
"Why do I have poor posture?"
Poor posture can result from a number of underlying causes. For many of us, it's years of bad habits and poor postural positions that cause a slow change. From an early age children are sitting awkwardly on the carpet, then into adulthood leaning at desks, looking down at phones, hunching over computers, sitting in cars and slouching on the sofa...
...If you are a driver - think about how far you can turn your head to the right to check your blind spots.
Can you turn as far as you could when you first learnt to drive?
Do you need to twist your body to compensate for not being able to turn your head so far?
This is a common complaint we see at ROCK.. Sometimes the cause is from a trauma to the neck, but more often it's a result of poor posture and small changes that have developed over time.
...Think about your posture as a reminder that looking after your spine is as important as brushing your teeth to maintain a health lifestyle.
So remember, stand tall and proudly say, I am looking after my spine with ROCK!
If you have any more questions about posture and how to improve it, feel free to talk to any of the ROCK team!
Good posture not only looks great, but feels fantastic!
Taking back control of your posture!
Posture isn't something to ignore. These postural changes affect the structure of your spine, impacting the bones and nerves, and this can lead to pain and discomfort in the future.
That's why many people choose to maintain a healthy spine by seeing a chiropractor regularly...
Member of the month!
Every month, the team at ROCK get together and decide on a
special member we would like to thank for their commitment to
Chiropractic! Its a very difficult decision as we have so many
amazing people! Last month we couldn't pick just one person!
Treat yourself, on behalf of ROCK!
Since the beginning Linda has been a dream! She always has a smile for everyone in the centre, a smile that is very infectious!
We asked Linda for a few words:
"Just wanted to say thank you for making me mobile again and able to stand after sitting! A great achievement!"
Our 'Ray of Sunshine', Leigh!
Leigh has had a few ups and downs whilst with ROCK, but he always lives up to his title ‘Our ray of sunshine’!
We asked Leigh for a few words:
"I have been visiting Rock Chiropractic for about 2 years and they have done wonders. Two separate injuries and I have bounced back, thanks to everyone keeping me physically and mentally strong throughout"

All you need to wow at your next dinner party.
Facts about your spine to amaze!
5. Your spine has:
Over 120 muscles
220 individual ligaments
Over 100 joints!
4. Astronauts returning from space are 3% taller! They gain approximately two inches of height because their cartilage has expanded. micro gravity!
2. Humans have the same number of vertebrae in their neck as a giraffe...
1. Our vertebral discs are made up of 88% water... Throughout the day this water is slowly squeezed out of these discs every time the spine moves.
This water is then reabsorbed when we are lying in bed and the pressure is taken off the discs. Because of this, it is likely you are somewhat taller when you first get up than you are at the end of the day!
