JACKSON FAMILY BENEFIT CONCERT
Some of the Orlando Area's up and coming Christian R & B and next generation gospel acts are coming to FPCE for a benefit concert for the Aleya Jackson Family. Aleya was an alumni of Center Street Kids who was tragically murdered this autumn. These great acts are gathering to celebrate her life and raise money. Food and soft drinks will be served, and donations will be accepted at the door. Due to the rescheduling of Feruary's Congregataional Dinner, this is moving to March. Stay tuned for details.

Center Street Kids Christmas Pageant
Pre-School Christmas Pageant
This is probably not a good photo to put at the top of an article about Lent; but I wanted to show off most of my clan having a fun lunch in NYC’s "Little Italy" the day after Christmas. We were enjoying a generous gift given by FPCE members. Before too much more time slips away, I want to be sure to say Thanks for the many gifts, cards, and kind thoughts I received during the Holiday season.
So on to Lent. I began my sojourn with you last year on March 1, Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. So I’ve come full circle. Lent is a movable season, so it begins earlier this year—February 14! We will have a worship service that evening in the Sanctuary where we will once again remind ourselves of some of the truths we like to ignore: we ain’t perfect, we need to reflect on and repent of our imperfections, and we need to open ourselves to God’s generous grace.
So Lent, the forty days before Easter (not counting Sundays), prompts us to examine our lives honestly and to share as best we can in the humility that Jesus evidenced in his life, suffering, and death. In an “everything is rosy” world, folks do not necessarily list Lent as their favorite time of year. Yet, just like we cannot truly know good without a pretty large dose of evil, we cannot fully appreciate the celebration of the victory Jesus won over death (resurrection!) without walking figuratively with him through the valley of the shadow of death (crucifixion).
We temper our Lenten efforts with the fact that we know the end of the story—that resurrection and life win! Our worship during Lent will take on a slightly more-subdued nature. But not too much. Try as we might, we remain Easter People, even through this time of reflection. My encouragement is that you make an honest consideration of your personal walk with Jesus more a part of the Lenten experience, even as you commit to growing in your faith as a joyful disciple of our Savior.
