Plungin' For A Purpose
“It was so humbling to see so many people come together today for such an amazing cause,” said Katana Ackerman.
The Special Olympics is a worldwide organization that provides an opportunity for people who have disabilities to participate in sports. For 14 years, the Myrtle Beach area has been participating in a fundraiser for The Special Olympics. This is known as the Polar Plunge. In 2018, the Myrtle Beach community raised $97,000 for the Special Olympics. This year, their goal was $110,000, and as of now, they have raised $63,504.
There was so much excitement running into the water. It was so great to see people so happy to do something positive for others.
The Polar Plunge was full of people who were so happy to do things for there community and adamant about helping people (right).
“I’ve been going to the Polar Plunge for two years now and I love it! It’s great to socialize and raise money for the Special Olympics,” said Kayla Dixon, freshman.
On the Polar Plunge page, you have the opportunity to sponsor an athlete, provide free health screenings for participants in this competition and sponsor teams to participate in the Polar Plunge. Unfortunately, there are many families that cannot pay for their kids to compete in The Special Olympics. That is why it is up to the Plungers to raise money, so that kids with disabilities get the same opportunities as healthy children.
Each team got to run through the yellow line and go into the water
At the end of the day, it is always best to help out people in your community and it feels good too. There is a major life lesson that we can learn from this: It feels better to give back to the community, even if hurts to jump in the freezing cold ocean.
National parks were forced to shut down, resulting in polluted parks.
The government was shut down for a total of 35 days.
By: Olivia Peters, Staff Writer
Well, according to the Washington Post, a government shutdown occurs when Congress cannot agree on a spending budget for the upcoming year. During a government shutdown, many ‘non-essential’ workers, such as those of the TSA and IRS, either stay home without pay or are encouraged to continue working without compensation. Essential workers, such as those of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Border Patrol, and the FBI, continue to work with pay during a shutdown. During this past shutdown, around 800,000 federal workers missed two paychecks, national parks such as Yosemite were either closed or overflowing with litter and waste from park attendees, and Democrats and Republicans were still unable to agree on border security spending.
Three days before Christmas 2018, Capitol Hill, usually swarming with members of the Senate and House, became quiet amid the government shutdown after Democrats blocked President Trump’s request for $5 billion to fund the border wall he had promised during his presidential campaign.
On Jan. 25, President Trump signed a bill that would temporarily reopen the government for three weeks until Feb. 15. According to CNN, President Trump signed the bill to reopen the government on the basis that both Democrats and Republicans would work together and agree on funding on border security.
You may be wondering: What does it even mean to ‘shutdown’ the government? Why does it matter?

Students were asked to nominate their peers and then voted on the nominated students. At Socastee High School, Spanish and French are offered to all students as foreign language options to obtain the necessary credits for graduation. Spanish and French are both widely spoken languages in the United States and surrounding countries, such as Mexico and parts of Canada, making them both very practical languages to have a firm or complete understanding of.
“French is one of the major business languages… most jobs that deal with international dealings need a French speaker [and] those who take French and know French have a huge advantage,” said Mrs. Kelly Chilson, French teacher.
Many people do not understand sign language or recognize it as a language, but according to startasl.com, around 500,000 people in the United States and Canada use American Sign Language as their ‘natural,’ or first, language that they learned as a child.
Knowing how to properly use American Sign Language, or at least having a background in the language, would likely benefit students, whether they are deaf, hearing impaired or have no hearing problems whatsoever, simply because they would be able to communicate with and include a larger number of people in daily conversations.
“People who are deaf… or people who have any other kind of disability may feel uninvolved or secluded, so when you add sign language, people, especially those who are hearing impaired, can feel more included in society,” said Alan Norman, Socastee High School’s special education teacher, “students would be able to understand how a person feels because they cannot hear,” Norman added.
Knowing American Sign Language, or at least having a partial understanding of the language, is a unique skill to have that will allow you to communicate with hearing impaired or deaf individuals that otherwise would not be included in certain activities. It is also a skill that can set you aside from others when joining the workforce, just like knowing any additional languages would. Adding American Sign Language as a language course in high schools around the United States would greatly benefit students and prepare them for the future.
American Sign Language is widely used as a primary form of communication by deaf and hearing impaired in the United States.
The Unspoken Language
In high schools across the United States, taking a foreign language course is mandatory for graduation. The most common languages offered are Spanish and French, while some schools also offer German, Italian, Latin or a combination of these as well as others. Learning any of these as a second language is useful because it gives an individual the ability to communicate with more people, but there is one language that is missing from this list: American Sign Language (ASL).
A weakening Polar Vortex that is causing dramatic weather changes throughout the United States has many worried about what weather changes might come in the future years and what might be causing these changes. The Polar Vortex is an upper level area of low pressure near Earth’s poles. The weakening and unstableness of the Polar Vortex is causing it to shift downward towards the states.
Scientists have stated that there is no evidence linking the Polar Vortex dipping to climate change; however, many people are blaming climate change. The recent winter temperatures have been revealing that the vortex is not as strong and sturdy as it once was, many people are starting to blame global warming for the sudden weather changes. The dipping of the Vortex is causing the plunging temperatures in the North and Northwest of the United States. This is causing some areas to begin to plan for the worst as the weather worsens. Temperatures in the areas affected by the weakening and shifting vortex are becoming life threatening as they plunge towards the negatives with extreme wind chills. Some of the areas in the midwest are enduring their lowest temperatures in almost two decades according to The Weather Channel.

The Evaporating Vortex
“The road conditions after the snow melts and freezes then melts again. It washes our roads away because the asphalt can’t hold the amounts of water running underneath. This causes massive potholes and washouts, not to mention the severe flash floods from the water running off the hillsides into the valleys.” Said Loren Drabick, Resident of Darlington Pennsylvania.
The frigid weather is causing many schools and businesses to shut down early, along with government agencies in Washington D.C. Roughly 224 million people will experience the below freezing temperatures and endure the harsh conditions that come with the dropping temperatures. The dipping Vortex has claimed 16 lives so far. Government officials are warning people to stay indoors, because spending too long in the temperatures can cause hypothermia within minutes. Along with 50 frostbite victims being treated in a Chicago hospitals.
The traitorous temperatures are causing many problems across the midwest, making the end of winter the worst in decades. As the worst of the storm is beginning to pass, the temperatures are continuing to claim innocent lives. Scientist are actively studying the causes of the dipping Vortex and what this might mean for future.
With the freezing temperatures, lakes and other bodies of water have begun to freeze, causing the water to stop flowing.
most are selling for very high prices, some as much as $10 for just a small bag. Don't fret though! Krispy Kreme is coming out with their very own Conversation Doughnuts.

This will be the first time in 150 years that Sweethearts by Necco will not be available.
Now, according to Daily News, the brand has been acquired by Spangler Candy Company and has been promised to be back on the market in 2020. You can still find some Sweethearts that are off-brand or online, but
Since 1886, the Sweetheart candies have been the center of all love on Valentine’s Day. Sweethearts are the embodiment of Valentine’s Day, and they have been the face of the holiday for generations. These small, heart-shaped candies are what make this holiday enjoyable. The cute candies come in many different flavors, colors and iconic sayings like “Kiss Me,” “Be Mine” and “Text Me.” Necco had to create 8 billion of these cute treats every year to meet their fans demand. Their sweet taste, cheap price and hilarious texts always brought smiles to customer’s faces.
However, in Spring of 2018, Necco filed for Bankruptcy Protection, and in July 2018, the company went out of business. This is especially “heartbreaking,” since, according to Candystore.com, Necco’s Sweethearts were the most popular Valentines Day candy in 2018.

Mo' Money, Mo' Problem$
Several students have been on Kidsearnmoney.co to check their earnings.
KidsEarnMoney.co has boomed in popularity is the past few months, but why is that? Kids Earn Money is like eBay and Etsy in the fact that you can earn money online, however, Kids Earn Money does not require you to sell or make anything. The only thing you need to do is create an account at no cost, which gives you an additional $25, and then share your referral code.
Once people click on your link, you will receive $2, if they click on your link and create an account, then you will receive $10. If you would like to earn even more money, there are other tasks that you can complete, like testing out new apps, filling out surveys or even creating a youtube video. You can cash out your earnings through Paypal, Cash App, Western Union, mailed checks, etc. The website even claims that you can make up to $500 in one day. It is so easy that it sounds too good to be true.
By: Nancy Alvarez, Co-Editor
According to Kids Earn Money, the company can afford to pay account holders because when someone clicks on your link, you have then exposed the company to more people. When more people are on the website, that means that more advertisements are being seen. This causes the ad revenue to increase, which then allows you to receive the $10 per sign up.
The founders of Kids Earn Money seem to be putting the effort into making this look like a trustable website; however, there are alot of minor details that don’t add up. They claim to be the “number one social learning network for teenagers.” They also claim to have been featured on CNN business, but when I searched for Kids Earn Money not a single article popped up. So why would they create this fake persona to convince naive kids to give them permission to access their card information?
Mowing the lawn, selling lemonade and doing household chores are all pretty common things kids, over the years, have done to make money when they are not able to get a job. However, as technology has advanced, so has the way people transfer money and even earn money.
It seems to be that every year, there is a new program created to make it easier for people to make money without actually getting a job. Websites like eBay, Etsy and now Facebook have a “marketplace” to sell slightly used or handmade items, or even list an available apartment for rent. While those seem to be trustable pages to allow to have your card information, there are other pages that may not be as secure.
“Making money online… should be utilized more often by youth because society is more online based and will eventually impact the future,” said Gabe Colon, Senior.
Not only does the website give misleading information about being reported on CNN, but they need a lot of access to what they do on your phone. For example, the terms and policy states that if you are under the age of 99, you cannot use the website that is created for ‘kids’ to earn money. The company also ensures that the accounts created are actually being used and are not fake accounts before they transfer the money. After reading the terms and policies, you may still need some clarification, so instead of calling a 1-800 number like you would for any other company, you have to contact them via Skype or Twitter.
“The website is reviewing my account to make sure that I didn’t fake any of the signups and the money should be processed into my Paypal on February 14,” said Cece Funderburk, junior.
Many people have also claimed that their account was not fake and they never received the money. Other accounts have even been deleted randomly. Which only increases the chances of the website being a

scam, since part of their policy states that "your right to use the Kids Earn Money Sites and Features and our Services is not transferable," (section 1).
“I made $60 on Kids Earn Money, but when I wanted to cash out the money it only said receiving/pending and I never got any money,” said Hayley Martin, junior.
There are multiple issues with KidsEarnMoney.com, that other successful companies do not often have. This is also not the only company created to mislead people into believing that providing access to their card information is going to benefit them, when in reality, they are just waiting to be scammed.
So why would they create this fake persona to convince naive kids to give them permission to access their card information?

Valentine’s Day is not important to everyone. Whether you have a date or not, it is not always worth celebrating. On Valentine’s Day, it is tradition to get each other gifts, get dressed up and go out to a nice dinner. Some people enjoy doing this, and others believe that it is just like any other day.
Most girls will get flowers as a gift on Valentine’s Day. It is a great way to show your date how much you love them. Roses are the most popular flower distributed on this day, but they are not everyone’s favorite. Carnations are another beautiful option. They are cheaper and come in a wider range of colors.

Leading up to Valentine’s Day, the isles in every grocery store are filled with different kinds of candy. As a gift, it is tradition to get your date their favorite candy. While chocolates in heart shaped boxes are the most common, some people prefer fruit flavored candy, like fun dip, gummy bears or skittles

The season of award shows are upon us; the entertainment industry is gearing up to see what artist will be the most profitable and the rest of us are hoping for our favorite artists to come out on top. On Feb. 10, the 2019 Grammys will be hosted by the 15-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys, and we will see the best music from each genre be awarded. Although there is a seemingly endless amount of categories that are recognized at the show, there are a few major categories that interest the audience the most.
Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best New Artist are the categories that truly show who the best in the business is. In prior years, this category only included five albums but this year it was increased to eight. Album of the Year nominees are:
Although the two categories, Record of the Year and Song of the Year, seem as though they are the same thing, the award for the record recognizes the artist’s performance along with other contributions i.e. producers, recording engineers and mixers if it is different than the artist. The award going to song of the year only recognizes the songwriter and artist. The nominations for Record of the Year are:
“Shallow,” Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper
“Rockstar,” Post Malone ft. 21 Savage
“The Middle,” Zed, Maren Morris, Grey
“All the Stars,” Kendrick Lamar and Sza.
It will be no surprise that the Grammys choose another generic pop hit to win song of the year, seeing as that is all that is nominated anyway but hopefully they will choose the best of the bad lot.
“I Like It,” Cardi B
“The Joke,” Brandi
“This Is America,” Childish Gambino
“God’s Plan,” Drake
“Beerbongs & Bentleys” by Post Malone
“Dirty Computer” by Janelle Monae
“Golden Hour” by Kacey Musgraves
Black Panther: The Album, Music and Inspired by various artists
Most of the songs in these two categories are also concurrent with each other, so it is no surprise that the nominees for Song of the Year are:
Everything You Need to Know About the 61st Grammys
None of these songs are exactly musical masterpieces, so it is tough to say why they were nominated for their production value or which song will win based on those qualities. In theory, the song that has the most distinction or seems to define the year the best will most likely take home the trophy.
The 61st Grammys will take place on Sunday, Feb. 10.
The nominees for Best New Artist are probably the least surprising out of the lot, consisting of: Chloe x Halle, Luke Combs, Jorja Smith, Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha, Greta Van Fleet, Margo Price, and H.E.R.. It is still hard to say who will win the award for Best New Artist because sometimes the Recording Academy voters will award the artist that did the best in the previous year, who they think will be the next icon, and sometimes it seems as though they simply pick a random singer and award them.
Every year before the big event, people make their own predictions on who will take home the trophy. Fans of an artist feel as though their favorite musician was robbed of either a nomination or a win, and every year, the winner of the categories are criticized for not being deserving of the acclamation. It’s always important however, to remember that there is a big difference in what artists and songs should win and what ones will win. Although, with awards shows such as these, there is genuinely no telling who they will choose to take home the prize. Because of the way that each category is voted on, the inconsistency is always there and the fan favorites are always snubbed.
But don’t be too disheartened when your favorite artist doesn’t win; remember that it is only voted on by Recording Academy Voting members who may not always have the best taste. The members of the Recording Academy believe that they are responsible for influencing the future of music and what role it plays in our society, but the people that they are targeting are not going to listen to music simply because it did good at an award show.
As exciting as it is to watch all of the winners get announced, everyone's favorite part of the evening is the entertainment. Even if your favorite artist doesn’t win their category, at least you can enjoy their legendary production. The night will be filled with performances by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Post Malone, Miley Cyrus, Brandi Carlile, Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Dan + Shay, Janelle Monae, Kacey Musgraves and Shawn Mendes. Each of these artists are nominated for top categories and are sure to bring in viewers of all types. It kind of makes you wonder if the Recording Academy voters chose them as nominees, not because they believe they will win, but for the main purpose of having them perform and increase viewer audience.
In the end, the Grammy Awards are something that everyone looks forward to. In the way that we for some reason care about a random movie star getting married or the royals new baby being born, so why not indulge in that guilty pleasure just a little deeper by watching the Grammys. Just remember to not take it too seriously if you’re favorite artist doesn’t win, and to rub it in everyone’s face on Monday if they do.
'Galentine's' Day has become increasingly popular among single ladies who don't need a significant other to have a good Valentine's Day.
By: Liz Parrish, Staff Writer
With Valentine's Day around the corner, most people think there are only three ways to spend the day: single, taken or ignoring the day completely. But what if there was another option for how to spend the day? This Valentine’s Day, let’s propose a new way to spend your day and “Treat... Yo… Self…” as they say on the popular show “Parks and Rec.”
Instead of spending your entire day upset because your ‘dream’ guy or girl didn’t ask you out, spend the day
celebrating you and your singleness. Being single on Valentine’s Day can be a good thing; it allows you to spend the day doing what you love without being tied down.
When spending your day focusing on yourself, there are many ways to spend your day to its fullest. For instance, you could spend the day going on a shopping spree and taking advantage of sales, or you could even go on vacation for the day to somewhere you’ve never been and experience new things.
If you’re not one to spend the day by yourself, you could throw a ‘Galentine’s’ party for you and some of your fellow single friends. When throwing a Galentine’s party, get a fun group together and go out to eat or just stay in and have a feast filled with different kinds of foods and fun games. Make sure whatever you do on this day contributes to making your day better and showing everyone around you it is okay to be single. With Valentine’s day almost here, start planning your day in order to make it the best one yet.
