No General Meeting in September - Join Us at The Annual BBQ & Auction!

Dear Fellow Orchid Enthusiasts,
We celebrated our 60th year as a society at the recent Ice Cream Social & Bingo Night! I would have loved to see even more of you there to celebrate with us. The cake was delicious & the ice cream & toppings were plentiful, as were the orchids given as bingo prizes. Thanks to the many who brought plants to exchange for bingo cards & to our Membership Chair, Lynne Murrell, for arranging the purchase of plants from Brookside Orchids. They were very generous – giving us a couple more plants than we expected for the dollar amount the board agreed to spend. Thank you Brookside! Look for them at our spring show! Lynne also picked up & delivered the plants for us. Now that’s a great example of a volunteer! Thank you Lynne!
I also want to extend thanks to the ladies, Susan Anderson & Ann Conger – for calling out the bingo numbers. I now know how to get a bingo by making a martini glass!! And thanks to Susan for providing the game & the cards!
I would be remiss if I didn’t also thank Billie MacCarthy, Ann Possinger, Helen Finnegan, & all who stepped up to help with set up, take down & serving, as well as those who brought treats & toppings! This was a wonderful example of team work – proving many hands make light work!
Moving on into September! It’s time for our Annual Fall BBQ & Auction!!! This event is great as it allows us not only the opportunity to buy & sell plants, but also to get to know each other better – to rekindle old friendships & to make new ones. Have you signed up & have you considered volunteering for some of the tasks that have to be done in order to hold this event? See Susan or Ann P. We need your participation to make it work & make it great! REMEMBER – NO SHUTTLE NEEDED – PARKING ACROSS THE STREET!
The 2018 Spring Show seems far away now – IT’S NOT!! Planning takes a lot of time & effort & we all need to get involved! You do not need an extensive knowledge of orchids to do most of the required tasks. No matter what you volunteer to do – there will always be people to help you. This is truly a team effort & we need your participation to ensure success. Show Chairs are: Dennis Miller & Robyn Chosy. Contact either of them or any member of the board. We will all help point you in the right direction!
As the weather changes & all too soon we are moving into fall, you need to be thinking about what your orchids need. There are those who like to be put under a bench to sleep until spring, then there are those who need less water, more fertilizer, etc. If you have doubts about what your particular plant needs, do NOT hesitate to ask other members. Not all can give you an answer – but they can certainly put you in contact with someone who can. That’s one of the benefits of belonging to the society, take advantage of experience & expertise of others.
And finally, -NOT ALL OF YOU HAVE PAID YOUR DUES -YOU WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE ROSTER & THE MAILING LIST SOON UNLESS YOU PAY! (Dues were "due" in July.)
Stay well & happy growing!

Orchid Digest Vol. 81-3: Calling All Paphiophilesl
Six Paph Species Discovered this Year!
Yes, orchid mystique still exists in this world. You may think orchid hunting is tame in this age, but read this... The province of Aceh in the Northern end of Sumatra has known civil war for 29 years. A tsunami in 2004 was the catalyst in ending this war. Access to this area has been a grim challenge, but modern orchid hunters have infiltrated.
Now in 2017, 13 years later, 3 new species have been described from this previously impenetrable region – P. bungebelangii, P. lunatum and P. dodyanum.
Other new species include: P. zulhermanianum from Western Sumatra, P. agusii from Central Java and P. notatisepalum from the Yunnan province of China. Order this Volume of Orchid Digest to read detailed information on these new species. These are beautiful and exciting slipper orchid discoveries! Visit www.orchiddigest.com.
