Once a Greenback ~ Always a Greenback
I just turned 14 and I think my parents signed me up for drivers ed. I am so scared of driving. What can I do to ease my nervous?

There are a lot of summer sports like swimming, basketball, baseball, softball, and soccer and there are a lot more than that, but those are the main summer sports. Swimming is the most common summer sport because it is hot in the summertime and the pools are all open because it is hot. Most kids would do swimming because it is fun to do and you can do it with your friends and family. Sometimes the pool can be cold in the morning and if you are on a swimming team, you can have morning practices if your coach lets you. You will have to get used to the cold pool if you go to the pool in the Morning every day.
Basketball in the summer can be too hot because if it’s a really hot day outside and you practice or play a basketball game outside you might have something get around to you? But, most teams play their basketball games inside, so they will not have that problem. It’s like regular basketball, but in the summertime and you have more practices depending on the coach. You can join a team, just ask your friend if they are on a team and ask if you can join. But, you will have to be good if you want your team to win championships. Some people do it for fun.
Swimming in the summer can be hard because you use a lot of energy. You will have to be able to hold your breath and swim fast if you want to be on a team. You will have to have one side of your face out of the water so you can breathe and not drown. You will have to know how to do a front flip in the water so you can turn around fast so you can win the race. You will have to push yourself in practice and meets so you can become a faster swimmer.
Baseball in the summer can be hard because you will have to be in the hot sun all day for practice and games. You will have to have a lot of grit to stay in the hot summer every day and do hard workouts with your team. You will have a lot of responsibility to put on sunscreen before practice or games. You will have to be nice so your teammates will like you and will want to hang out with you on day you don't have practice. You will have to know how to hit or throw to be on a baseball team that will let you play.
Softball in the summer is just like baseball in the summer, but with girls and a bigger ball. They pitch differently, they go like a circular motion with the ball. There are two different types of bats in softball one is the metal bat and the other is the composite bat. The composite is a bat with a line in the middle and with a plastic around it that is stronger than metal. If it is cold outside, you can not use it because it will break and you will have to buy a new one and it does not have a round part on the end of the bat, it is like pushed in at the top of the bat. A composite, if you hit the ball at the end, will not vibrate, but with a metal bat, it will vibrate.

Liberty Middle school has had iPads for the past five years. This coming year we will be changing to Chromebooks. There are many different reasons on why we have decided to change to Chromebooks. For example it is a lot cheaper to buy. There are also different opinions on the new change.
Many students think that it is better that we are getting new technology. Mostly because they think that it will be a lot faster to get to the websites. Madison Hunt thinks that Macboks would be better but Chromebooks are still better than old ipads. Most 8th graders think that it isn’t fair how the year they leave everyone is getting the good stuff. Well the reason for that is that every four to five years schools get to update their technology. Pratt USD 382 decided that it was better to get Chromebooks because you can buy two Chromebooks for the price of one iPad. Mrs. Wilson on the other hand is all for the new Chromebooks. She thinks that Chromebooks offer more than iPads ever did. For example you can use all the things that would have required Flash, on an iPad you can not. Getting new Chromebooks would allow every student to be able to have technology with them at all times during school. When asked if she liked the idea of new ipads Ms. Donnenwerth said “ I would miss using some of the apps that iPads provided, but a keyboard does make a difference”. When asking Erin Squires the same questions she said “ I honestly don’t really like them. If I were to accidentally close the chromebook it would log me out. We would also be carrying more since they are a little more bigger than iPads,”. Jacob Muntz also said “I don’t really like them because the graphics aren’t that good. Yeah, I agree that they might be as thick as iPads, but with iPads you don’t really need a special bag to carry it in,”.
The school has officially decide to buy Chromebooks. The biggest change other than the Chromebooks would be that every student would have one. The fifth and sixth graders will all have one, but they won't be able to take it home. They would have to check their chromebook in and out. On the other hand the seventh and eighth graders will still be able to take them home. In conclusion, we are getting new Chromebooks and hoping that everything will be a lot faster a easier.
Dear Scared New Driver,
Learning something new is always scary. Don't worry you will do fine. I do have some tips for you to help you become a safe driver.
1. When you get behind the wheel make sure your phone is out of reach.
2. Turn off the radio. When you are more comfortable driving then you can turn it back on, but make sure it is not too loud.
3. Make complete stops at stop signs and stop lights.
4. Always pay attention to other drivers and pedestrians.

1 to 1 with Chromebooks....
As summer is around the corner, the more and more the days get nicer. At LMS we recently added a new class this year called Healthy Living and Gardening. In this class, you learn how to plant things, how to take care of plants and how to test the PH in the soil. Maddie Drake talked about how she liked the class because it taught them many new things and she is supposed to be studying the potatoes and that is the plant that is doing the best! If people around our school need some tips on how to keep the garden clean or keep the plants alive. In a normal day of class, they go outside and water their plants. They also watch videos and take notes on a certain thing to keep their gardens fresh. Dawson Malone gave us information of why he likes the class so much, “Planting plants and being outside in nature instead of being behind a desk with a paper and pencil”. Dru Lunsford said his favorite thing is doing hands-on learning activities. The gardening class helps the library maintain the libraries plants and waters them whenever it needs to be done. The gardening class is one of the most higher rated classes out of the rest of the electives.

Many jobs are available for middle school students, who are around the age of 14. As you begin to look for a job, some things you need to keep in mind are that most jobs are not advertised, so you might have to do a little research. When looking for a summer job, think about what you want to do in the future. Even though you think the job you get now does not matter, the job you get now will influence your job later in life. You should allow your time to be flexible, so you can get more hours in. If you are not flexible with your time there will be a less likely chance you will have more job options.
Babysitting is a great way to learn how to work with children or animals. Babysitting is an easy way to earn 10 to $25 an hour. Pet sitting can help you be responsible for animals while their owners are gone, this could be one day or multiple. Before you are allowed to babysit you should consider getting CPR training, or a safe sitter course. Babysitting is a good way to put some extra money in your bank account, since some children need care all day while their parents are at work. If you are not ready to actually babysit you could be a mother's helper. While the mother of the child is doing work around the house you could play with the child, or keep it company.
You could offer to clean around someone's house. You can earn minimum wage ($7.25), or a little more. You can wash cars, clean pools, clean houses, or even just wash dishes. You could even do the most simplest things like mowing lawn, or doing yard work. If you wanted to make a lemonade stand, you would have to get permission from the government to sell on public land. Selling lemonade would be a good way to make money on a hot summer day. Be creative with all the options you have for a fun summer job.
When getting a summer job there are some lessons that can be taught. You may learn about personal financing, including real-world tutorials on income taxes, budgeting, and credit. Parents think it would be a good opportunity for the students to pitch in on household bills. Out of the many pros, there are some cons to having a summer job. Having a summer job could be a distraction for extracurricular activities. The main reason parents want their children to have a summer job, is so they stay out of trouble.

This was the first year that Mr. Forshee had the gardening class. This was an elective option if you wanted to take it. All the kids say that they are glad that they get to be in this class and it is very fun. Mallory said it is a really good thing to do if you don’t like sitting in class at a desk all day, then she recommends this class to do some hands-on activity. Maddie Drake was interviewed to get a better understanding of why they made theses signs, and she said “The Plant Markers in the garden are a nicer way of telling people to not walk or play in the garden. They made these because people were drawing on the bricks and moving them around. The Garden class don’t enjoy people walking through and messing it up because they have put a lot of effort and hard work into that garden. Mike Forshee is the teacher of the gardening class so he also was asked and said “ to make the garden look nicer and cooler and to tell you were and what are planted there. Some of the signs are just for show.”
