Ocras normally migrate to warmer waters in the winter, so the freezing water is causing them severe distress.

Even if these animals get released back into the wild, they may never be the same. This is a traumatic experience that these innocent whales have had to go through. Some of the beluga whales were babies that were still surviving off of their mothers milk, according to National Geographic. Also, The Telegraph stated that this could cause us to lose out entire orca population, and they are now on the official endangered species list.
Since these animals are seen as harmful and scary, their safety is being pushed to the side. However, these animals are completely innocent in this situation and the punishment is completely unnecessary. To sign the petition to stop this, visit https://forcechange.com/518091/demand-freedom-for-orcas-trapped-in-illegal-whale-jail/

Whales are some of the largest, most feared mammals in the ocean. Many people are unaware of the depressing conditions that some of these creatures are going through. Two types of whales, the orca and the beluga, are in danger off of the coast of Russia. Many of these whales are trapped into rectangular shaped enclosures of freezing ocean water.
According to www.ecowatch.com, some of these orcas and belugas have been contained since July of 2018. However, scientists were not aware of these conditions until November of 2018, when a video was released of the animals being trapped in the small pens.
Reports have described the places that they are being held as “whale jails.” The rectangular structures are rather small, no more than 30 or 40 feet per side, according to EcoWatch. While it may not seem very small, these whales are large creatures that need considerably more room to be able to function properly. The freezing cold water is also causing harm to the whales, especially the orcas. The beluga whales are already used to the cold water, but the orcas are used to migrating south for the winter according to National Geographic.
After hearing about these conditions, many start to wonder what the purpose is behind this treatment. According to Business Insider, the whales are most likely being sold to aquariums in China, where they can make up to $6 million dollars. This is illegal and is currently under investigation.
Beyoncé and Barack Obama, Malcolm X and Michael Jackson; what do they all have in common? Though all are very different individuals, they have all been highly influential and successful African Americans in U.S. history. The entire month of February is Black History Month to honor not only these people, but all heroic and iconic black figures in history.
Black History Month started in 1926 as a weeklong celebration but was expanded to a month long celebration fifty years later in 1976. Harvard graduate and the founder of Black History Month, Carter G. Woodson, wanted to raise awareness about African Americans’ contributions to America.
Oftentimes, we may pay little attention to the significance Black History Month holds, giving all of our time to Valentine’s Day, which falls in the same month. Some of us may not even realize how important it is to educate ourselves about the history of African Americans, how far the treatment of African Americans has improved in our society along with how much further it needs to go.
We all know about the horrors of our own history and the ill treatment of African people. Only in 2018 was lynching passed as a federal crime. At the beginning of this month, a yearbook photo of Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam surfaced online, unconfirmed on whether or not he was posed as the person in dressed blackface or KKK robes. According to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, incarceration rates for African Americans is 5 times higher than it is for white people in America.
Yes, we’ve had our first black president, but clearly there is so much more our society can improve on.
So what are some ways we can educate ourselves and celebrate Black History Month? To celebrate, you can do anything from listening to famous jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong or Count Basie, visit Mansfield Plantation in Georgetown, SC to learn what everyday life was like for African Americans during slavery, support African American owned businesses or learn about local and national African American heroes. Whatever you do to celebrate this month, we must remember the horrors of the past and not allow history to repeat itself. We must continue to move forward.

Getting a job as a teen is difficult, but not impossible. With the right attitude, being employed is achievable.
As high school students, we struggle to find balance between schoolwork, friendships and after school activities. As we progress through our high school careers, we find that we really, really need one thing in addition to these things: money. How do you get money as a teenager, though? The answer is simple: get a job.
Getting a job as a teenager can be hard, though. Lots of businesses don’t want to hire high school students because of availability, transportation or lack of experience, but the truth is, getting a job anywhere as a student is achievable with just a few essential steps.
Step 1: Bring A Résumé
If you have any prior job experience, definitely add it to your résumé. Even if you haven’t had a job before, include any community service you have participated in, or any skills you have that might set you apart from other candidates. These skills may include speaking another language, having effective time management skills or being a strong leader.
Especially since you are a teenager, taking initiative and bringing a résumé will prove that you are ready to join the workforce and show that hiring you is a good decision.
Step 2: Be Available
Having open availability is something that high school students struggle with, simply because we go to school during the day, and make time during the afternoon, night and weekends to hang out with friends or complete school work. Being available is crucial in the process of getting a job because if an employer sees that you cannot work, they will not want to hire you.
Time management is a very important skill that comes with getting a job, and once you get into the routine of working, balancing school, homework and friendships will become normal. Although it may be difficult at first, it is possible.
Step 3: Be There
Make sure that when you get a job, you have reliable transportation. If you drive and have a vehicle of your own, this should not be a problem, but if you do not, it is smart to make sure that a family member or friend is able to take you to and from work.
If you do not have reliable transportation, you may be late to work, and if you are late multiple times, you may face consequences or even get fired.
Having a job as a high school student equips you with the necessary communication skills that are crucial later in life. Although it may seem impossible to get a job as a teen, taking initiative and showing that you are worth a company’s time will guarantee you a spot on their payroll.
Get A Job!
When you picture a generic American high school, you think of gossiping in the hallways, kids at their lockers, students running to get to class and those last minute cram sessions before a big test. While most of these stereotypes hold true, there is one that has become outdated in today’s high schools...lockers. Students have converted to carrying all of their belongings with them throughout the entire day, instead of leaving some of their books at their locker.
There are an abundant amount of lockers that the school provides, so the real question is: why does nobody use them. In today’s high schools, it just isn’t realistic for a student to go back to a certain area in the school to grab books when their class is 3 floors away. It seems as though many students also enjoy the comfort of having all of their possessions with them at all times in case of emergencies.
Another reason high school students choose not to use them is that in middle school, students were forced to use their lockers; there was no keeping your backpack with you the whole day or keeping all of your possessions with you. I think that this practice may have pushed a negative reaction regarding lockers for students that went to middle schools that practiced this. Teachers made it so that students weren’t allowed to have the freedom of choosing what they carried with them throughout the day, so when the students reached high school, there was a complete flip and they decided to carry everything with them at all times.
Due to the lack of locker usage, many schools have resorted to taking them out completely to create more space in the hallways. “[I have]spoken to the district office, and that’s one of the requests that [they] can put in for summer work is to have them come in and take some of the lockers out,”stated Jeremy Rich, the principal of Socastee High School. Administrators feel that there is simply no need for them to take up space that schools don’t have if they are no longer being utilized.
It seems as though the parents and teachers are advocating for keeping the lockers more than the students. Generation X went to high school when lockers were a large part of their American culture and the demolition of lockers will feel like the true demolition of the America that they grew up in. However, some students are working on alternative options to lockers, such as shareable cubbies that a student can use for a short period of time, instead of having a locker that they don’t need for a whole year.

The INF Treaty was an arms control agreement between the United States of America and Russia that was signed Dec. 8, 1987. The treaty terminated all land-based ballistic and cruise missiles and launchers. This meant that neither countries could produce and test missiles within ranges of 500-5,500 km (310-3,400 miles).
Now, this once prosper treaty has been disbanded on Feb. 1, 2019 by President Donald Trump under allegations that Russia has been violating the treaty for years now when they created the 9m729, a dangerous and illegal cruise missile, and in October of 2018, Trump finally announced that the U.S. would withdraw from the treaty if Russia was not to destroy the cruise missile. Of course, Russia denied violating any rules with the missile and have continued with it's advancement. Under these conditions, the Trump administration has announced its own plan to develop a medium-sized missile, sparking conversation of a possible arms race. This could jeopardize alliances and what little is left over global arms control.
NATO, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, has teamed up with the U.S. against Russia. The U.S. Ambassador for NATO, Kay Bailey Hutchison, has warned Russia that if it does not terminate the development of the cruise missile, the U.S. will “take out” the missiles.
“The counter-measures would be to take out the missiles that are in development by Russia in violation in the treaty,” said Hutchison while continuing to claim the missile is still in development even though the U.S. has accused Russia of deploying it last year. She has even gone as far as to suggest a preemptive strike when the the Russian missile becomes operational. If that is the case, those actions could cause another war between the U.S. and Russia. Nine hours after she spoke, chaos ensued on social media fearing, that she meant the the United States were going to attack Russia. NATO and others have come forth to assure people that Hutchison just simply misspoke and the U.S. would not start a nuclear war with Russia.
Cruise missiles that violate the INF Treaty
U.S. President Ronald Regan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev at the signing of the INF Treaty.
Russian Officials have caught wind of what Hutchison has said and not pleased, to say the least.
“The impression is that people making such claims are unaware of the degree of their responsibility and the danger of aggressive rhetoric,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Interfax, a Russian news agency, “Who authorized this lady to make such allegations? The American People? Do ordinary Americans know that they are paying out of their pockets for so-called diplomats who behave so aggressively and destructively?”
Russia still denies ever violating the treaty. Actually, Russia has long feared that U.S. missile shield could be used covertly to preemptively target their President: Vladimir Putin, who controls the Russian Nuclear Arsenal. The U.S. has long denied that this is the purpose of their missile defense system, but Hutchison's comments directly fueled the Russians Concerns.
Zakharova has now said that Russian Nuclear Experts are preparing a more technical response to Hutchison’s comments
Russia has also accused the U.S. in the past of violating the treaty with it's Aegis Ashore missile installations in Romania and similar installations in Poland that are still in progress, claiming they could launch cruise missiles that violate the treaty. Of course, the United States have denied these accusations, stating they only launch SM-3 Interceptor Missiles, which are not in violation of the treaty.
The United States has made multiple efforts to bring Russia back into compliance, but has made little progress. Now, under the order of Congress, the Pentagon has began making plans plans for banned missiles that the U.S. could deploy if the treaty officially and formally falls apart.
The tension between the United States and Russia has induced the U.S. military to start considering improving their defense against cruise missile attacks from Russia to U.S. bases in Europe.
“The treaty is in danger because of Russia’s actions,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters, “All allies agree that the most plausible assessment would be that Russia is in violation of the treaty. It is therefore urgent that Russia addresses these concerns in a substantial and transparent manner.”
There has been no further confirmation on the state of the relationship between Russia and the U.S., nor Russia’s thoughts on the matter. Either way, this conflict is far from resolved, and more information will be released within these next few months.

Acai bowls and smoothies are very alike but also different. Acai bowls have a smoothie-like base but are layered with different kinds of granola, fruits and toppings. Smoothies, on the other hand, are only the base of an acai bowl, but smoothies are more convenient and easier to take on the go.
The butter on pancakes melt as your pour syrup on the top, or maybe on the crepes you’ve just ordered at a cafe. Whichever you prefer, both are delicious options and a great choice, but this is not how everyone feels. Many people believe pancakes are better because of their fluffiness and how they never fail to satisfy your cravings.

Bubble tea is a Taiwanese drink invented in the 1980s, but it has become very trendy recently. Bubble tea is known for its trademark of jelly balls in the bottom of each drink. Traditional tea, however, has been around for almost 5,000 years and is still the majorities favorite.

Rolled ice cream or regular ice cream? Rolled ice cream is a twist on the traditional way of styling ice cream. Both can be paired with toppings, syrups and fruits. The main difference between the two is the way of serving the ice cream and the aesthetic that many rolled ice cream dishes bring to the table.
The excessive pollution is causing a thick smog like layer over the city.
India’s air pollution has been a growing issue in recent years, causing a variety of health issues and global concerns. India has nine of the 10 world's worst polluted cities, according to the World Health Organization. India’s Kanpur has a population of three million, leading in the most polluted city in India along with Delhi.
For years, the Indian government has been focusing on trying to reverse the toxins in the air. They had recently stated a plan that was developed to fight their war on air pollution, but some say this has come a little too late. After almost 1.2 million deaths last year caused by the terrible air pollution, 51.4 percent were younger than 70. Some of the worrisome health risks of living in the toxic air are but are not limited to; lower respiratory infection, heart disease, strokes, lung cancer and diabetes. According to Quartz, “A nationwide survey, published in Lancet Planetary Health on Dec. 6, found that at least 12.5% of deaths in 2017, or one in eight, can be attributed to unusually high rates of lower respiratory infections, heart disease, strokes, lung cancer, and diabetes, which are a result of severe air pollution in a certain percentage of cases.” Throughout India, the pollution has created a dark constant fog in the air, forcing people to wear face masks when being outside for long periods of time.
The government has been raising awareness towards the things that cause this level of high pollution and how to prevent it. Many different things can cause this level of pollution in the air. One main thing that caused the toxic air is fuel emissions, along with many other things. India is dedicated along with the rest of the world to reduce the amount of pollution and toxic chemicals we are releasing into the environment.

While men are always so busy with all the hard work they have in order to provide for the family, they rarely have some free time but when they do, you are sure to find them in the gym benching no less than 400 lbs. or in the garage fixing the family car. But do not worry, because as busy as they are, they even help the mom with the kids. For example, he’ll probably go out play some catch with little Johnny in the backyard while mom finishes making dinner. Then, during dinner, he’ll help little Johnny with some words of advice for his “big game” on Saturday, since he was once a star athlete in high school.
Have you ever wondered why all women gossip so much, love makeup and are always in the kitchen? Or maybe you’re wondering why all men love sports, are no shorter than 6 feet and have abs? Well it seems to be that it’s simply because of their gender.
So if that is what life is like for males and females in the real world, they must have had equal expectations growing up right? The answer to that is no.
I’m sure someone out there is laughing at the idea of girls and boys being raised the same, but it’s because it is so ridiculous that it’s funny. I mean what would the world be like
There are millions of other examples and reasons why women and men need to stick to their gender roles. I mean the world would fall apart if a man wore makeup and painted their nails. And I cannot even imagine what would happen if a woman worked in construction and was a bigger gym rat than her husband. So if you want to keep living in a diverse, accepting society just stick to your gender rolls and everyone will be happy.
An average teenage girl applying makeup , as expected.
Since the beginning of time, men have had superiority over women. Men have always taken the role of lawyers, police officers, firefighters, doctors and even presidents. But it makes sense if you think about it, I mean just imagine a woman being the president of the United States; it’d be hilarious. She would be so sensitive during the debates, she’d probably start crying, and we all know how that would end. She’d probably start World War III when it came to be “that time of the month”. Since women are so emotionally unstable, they best fit as a “stay at home mom” where they can clean, cook and take care of the children.
today if we had girls encouraged to work in the field of science or boys growing up to be cosmetologists. Even toy companies know that girls are meant to play dress with with their Barbie dolls, play with makeup and glittery nail polish. Have you ever seen a toy makeup set that isn’t pink and purple with a girl pictured on the front? Probably not because makeup is for girls only. The toys with the boys pictured on the packaging are in the back of Toys R Us on the skateboards, footballs and toy cars.
The Chaos After The Storm

The school board updated the parents and family members ahead of time that we were gonna have make up days while the storm was going on.
The hurricane came and hit Myrtle Beach with extreme force, so much so that we were out of school for three weeks. The Horry County Board of Education insisted on making the days up. The school days we had to make up were unnecessary; we had to give up vacations and family time to attend school. Yet, we still had to postpone are tests and fly through our first semester.
High school students had it rough during the first semester. We had tests that we didn’t have the opportunity to study for, and we had mid-course exams and hadn’t even started the first part of the course. The makeup days that the board made us make up didn’t help. We hardly could do anything on those days due to the holidays; everyone planned vacations so they couldn’t go to school.
Parents and children plan trips during vacation time to prevent missing days of school. It’s only fair that we get the same treatment. We come to school for 180 days to learn. When we leave for those four weeks throughout the year, we're trying to catch up on time with our families that we’ve lost. We try our best to respect the school rules about attending school and only being allowed to miss 10 days, but when were getting our vacation time taken away it's affecting us.
I personally believe that the students’ health and ability to learn was impacted negatively. Most people's grades were dropping, and they couldn’t keep up with the missed schoolwork. There were also people who were strongly affected by the storm and couldn’t come back to school, even after the three weeks we were out.
We are having makeup days dedicated to the second semester, but the semester that we missed was the first one. How is this going to help us? They had to add more days to the semester somehow they should’ve fixed the different units that are useless. Half the things we learn in school are necessary for the career path that we choose.
What is the reason for the time we are off school anyways? Maybe we need a break, maybe a holiday, what about a special person in histories birthday? Whatever the cause, there is a specific reason to having that day off. We need to be more considerate towards students and teachers regarding vacation time during school.

To Cheese or Not to Cheese
The chef from Fox and Fig in Savannah Georgia serving his smoky, creamy, salty mac and cheese.
North Charleston hosted a “Vegan Mac Down” Saturday, Feb. 9, 12-2 p.m. at Cypress Hall in Wannamaker State Park to benefit Vegan Outreach and Cottonwood Farm Animal Sanctuary. Seven chefs competed to with their own unique recipe to make a pasta and a “cheesy” sauce.
If you wanted to taste and judge the chef’s mac and cheese dishes, tickets cost $22, plus an additional $2 to enter the state park. A crowd of at least 100 people lined up at the doors waiting: people from all walks of life, all ages and ethnicities waited for the 12:00 opening. Each person received two voting tickets as they entered and a plate and fork to start their mac and cheese journey. Each chef had large heated trays of their signature dish which they offered scoops of in small cups.
First, you were offered some amazing sides of sauteed purple cabbage and vegan collard greens. The first chef had a cheesy pasta topped with fresh cilantro, toasted coconut, and hot sauce which was different and very tasty, but it didn't taste much like mac and cheese. The next two tables had more traditional yellow/orange coated short noodles. Next was a vendor called “Cooking with Joya.” Her mac and cheese dish was “cheesy,” spicy, savory and really gave you the comfort food feeling when you ate it.
Cooking with Joya serving their mac and cheese to all the attendees of the festival.
The next two vendors were traditional style mac and cheese dishes, and the last offering was from “Fox and Fig” which was creamy, salty and uniquely smoky.
Some people attended just because they were curious about being vegan, others were vegan and wanted to get new recipes and some wanted to become vegan.
“I have been considering the vegan lifestyle because I have Lupus and I heard that plant-based diets help with the symptoms,” said an attendee of the mac and cheese festival.
Many of the attendees agreed the ethical treatment of animals was important to them. Some did not believe in hurting animals, a vegan couple from Myrtle Beach said, “our comfort food is nachos, so this was a perfect outing for us.”
The environment was a large factor in in the organization of this event. All the forks, plates, and cups were decomposable. It made it easy to toss your trash and know it wouldn't end up in a landfill or floating in our oceans.
At the end of the event, the organizer announced the judges picks for Most Original Mac and Cheese, the winner was Fox and Fig's smoky Mac and Cheese. The overall winner was Cooking with Joya. This was a fun, well organized event benefiting two organizations as well as the many attendee's appetites.
At the vegan mac and cheese festival there were five different kinds of mac and cheese that ranged from smoky to salty.
